A Simple Life Goal
We are all different in many ways, this much I know. As we are all different physically, mentally, and emotionally, our goals in life are different as well. We are all physically, mentally, and emotionally different in some way to the other people we share this beautiful world with. Our goals can say a lot about us, and they often change when we aren’t expecting them to. A life goal is a goal that especially changes often, I have learned. While goals can range from short-term to long-term, there is one goal we should all have in life. This goal is to leave the world a better place than how we found it.
Where This Goal Came From
Growing up, my family and I would go camping every summer. We went camping at the same campsite every year so I always knew what to expect when I got there. Camping is a great way to connect with your family and with nature. However, as humans, we don’t always treat nature the way we should. Some years we would show up, check in and arrive at our campsites only to find left-over trash from the family before us.
Ever since I was little, the only rule when we went camping was “to leave the campsite cleaner than how we found it.” This meant that when we arrived, we did a little cleaning. But when we left, we each had to find at least 2 pieces of trash to pick up and throw away. If there was no trash left to pick up, we had to do a little walking in order to find some. Sadly, there was always some trash somewhere. I didn’t understand it then, but I understand it now.
We Can’t Control How We Arrive
Just as my family and I couldn’t control how the previous family left the campsite when we arrived, we can’t control how the people of Earth leave it when we are born. We can’t arrive on this planet and have a say in how it is. As the famous quote explains, “it is what it is”. The Earth is what it is when we arrive, and we have to just move on without a second thought.
We Can Control How We Leave
How we arrive doesn’t matter; it’s how we leave that matters the most. It doesn’t matter that when my family showed up to the campsite there was trash left there; we had no control of that. We did have control over one thing though; how we were going to leave it. The same should be applied for the world. We have a choice to leave the world a better place than how it was when we arrived. I bet my parents didn’t think that little rule was going to change my life goals. But as I said before, goals change when we don’t expect them to!
A Simple Life Goal to Consider
I won’t tell you to make this a goal of yours, because, well, you make your own goals! But, can you imagine if we all had the same goal to leave the world a better place than how we found it? Just as my family and I made the campsite a better place for the next people, we all have the power to make the world a better place for the next people who arrive. Just as picking up two pieces of trash wasn’t a huge deal, leaving the Earth a better place than how we found it can be a small act as well.
There is no doubt that picking up trash is a good thing to do. However, leaving the world a better place than how we found it can be accomplished in hundreds of different ways! Be creative. Although I only had to pick up two pieces of trash, my family as a whole picked up 8 pieces of trash. That’s enough to make a noticeable difference. If we all pick up two pieces of trash before we leave (theoretically speaking), we will leave this world a much better place.
I hope this perspective helps you to make better choices in your life. I would love to hear how you have already left the world a better place than how you found it. Thank you readers and don’t forget to smile!
