6 Things To Do During A Beach Storm
THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE FOR MORE INFO.
We can control a lot of things in our lives, the weather not being one of them. I learned this the hard way on my last vacation to the beach, where I was stranded inside for 3 days during a tropical storm (Read about this unforgettable experience here). While I could have just sat inside and been upset, I found many things to do and ended up making the most of my vacation! Sometimes it’s hard to think of things to do in the moment, so here are 6 things to do during a beach storm.
1.) Practice Yoga
When there’s a beach storm, it’s easy to just sit inside on the couch and do nothing. This is fine, as long as you don’t do it too long! During my beach vacation, it rained for 3 days straight. I could have easily sat all day, but my body wouldn’t have appreciated that too much. Instead, I took 30 minutes here and there to practice yoga. I didn’t want to do anything too crazy or too long, and that’s alright! Yoga can be as little as a morning stretch. Anything to make you feel good and give your body a break from sitting.
Waking up early every morning, I would stretch for about 20 minutes. I made sure to really focus on my hamstrings and my back, as they were feeling especially tight from sitting in the car for 12 hours on our way to the beach. I would either practice in my room, on the back porch, or on the beach whenever the storm took a 30 minute break here or there. Whatever kind of yoga practice you do, make sure you take that time to tune into your body and figure out what you need. My motto is, “If your sitting, your stretching!”
2.) Play Games
This is a common thing to do when you’re bored, but many people forget to play games because they are too busy on their phones/watching T.V. Side note: don’t be on your phone during any vacation. Enjoy the present moment (Love Your Now), and enjoy the people you’re with! Anyways, play games. Whether it’s a board game or a communication game, games are a great way to pass the time and enjoy the people your with. My all time favorite game is Smart Ass, which is the best game to play with people of all ages! I laugh each and every time I play it, and it’s a very simple game to understand and play.
Another game I love to play is charades. I am guilty of becoming overly competitive, but that’s what makes it so fun. Whatever game you play, remember to have fun and enjoy the moment! Laughing is a cure for any rainy day.
3.) Go To An Aquarium
Stuck inside on a beach vacation because of a storm? Go be stuck inside somewhere besides your house! Specifically, find an aquarium close by if possible. Aquariums are great for kids and adults alike, as you are able to see the marine life that lies beneath the surface of the ocean. I love going to the aquarium because I love to learn and see things I would otherwise never get to see. Such as seahorses, jellyfish, giant fish that I don’t know the names of, sting rays, crabs, and so much more!
Learning about the ocean and all of it’s wonders is something that has always caught my attention and fascinated me. While I don’t know where many aquariums are, I would say it’s well worth a long drive to see one. Even if there isn’t one close to you where you are, plan a trip to visit one for your future. Aquariums are well worth the time and money to visit!
4.) Dance In The Rain
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain”. This was always one of my favorite quotes, and while I was at the beach stuck in a storm, I had thoughts about it. I figured, why not make it literal? So I put on a pair of dirty shorts and a t-shirt I wore the day before, and I went outside and took a walk in the rain! It was only drizzling at this time, so I felt completely safe. And for some reason, I felt completely at peace and refreshed while I did this.
I walked to the beach and watched the rain hit the ocean, and nothing could have prepared me for the amount of peace I felt in that moment. I have always been fascinated by both the ocean and nature in general, so being in that moment was very invigorating to me. Many people think, “it’s raining! We have to get inside before we get wet!” But, we get wet when we swim and when we shower. Why is everyone so turned away from the idea of being in the rain?
I challenge you to put on some old cloths and take a walk (or dance) in the rain. As long as the storm is minor and you are in no danger, I promise you will not melt. The rain is apart of mother nature’s way of helping things grow; a fresh start for life. Enjoy the rain and enjoy some peace and quiet, because a storm can be the most peaceful thing if you just listen.
5.) Go Out For Food
Everyone loves food, there’s no question there. And I don’t know if it’s just me, but vacation food is the best kind of food. Eating out while on vacation is the best, and I even put money aside just so I can go out multiple times on my vacations. The best part of eating out is the chance to try new food from new places! Eating out, to me, is a huge part of what makes a vacation so great.
So, if your stuck inside during a storm, instead go out for some food! Whether it be a fancy restaurant or a local family owned place, eating out is fun no matter where it is. Not to mention eating out is a great way to just sit around and be with good company. Not hungry? Go out for drinks instead! During my vacation, while it rained for 3 days straight, my friends and I went out for food 4 times (and we have no regrets).
Eating out so many times, I was able to try many new things that I never thought I’d like! I was able to try crab, raw tuna, pickled ginger, and much more! Trying new things is one of my favorite things about traveling and going on vacations, and what better time than when you have nothing else to do? So go out, and try something new! It might end up being your new favorite food!
6.) Explore The Shore
When a storm hits, wind blows and waves crash. This means things from the ocean can wash up on shore at any time, and the things you could find might amaze you. I wouldn’t expect to find anything of value, but it’s fun to explore the shore after a storm and see what washed up.
When I took a walk along the shore during the storm, I found countless shells. There were small, large, sharp, smooth, white, and colorful shells. I have always loved hunting for shells ever since I was little, so finding all of these different kinds made my inner child smile. I also came across a hat, a pair of sunglasses, and multiple crabs that made me scream and run home as crabs give me the creeps. Again, nothing of value to me, just interesting to see what things the ocean might spit up after a storm. And who knows, maybe one day you’ll come across a message in a bottle.
Things You Don’t Want To Be Without During A Storm
While we can’t control the weather, we can check the weather in advance and get a general idea of what to expect. This being said, I did not check the weather nor prepare for the storm that hit during my beach vacation. During a power outage, fire, and flooding (read more about my unforgettable beach vacation), we were left without electricity, light, or charged phones. I now know to plan for the worst and expect the best, and I won’t travel without the following things ever again. Next time you pack for a vacation, make sure these things are on your list!
- Portable phone charger
- A hand-cranking flash light that requires no batteries (my favorite flashlight)
- Batteries (can be used for more than you think)
- A waterproof, portable radio for entertainment
- A smile and a sense of calm in a panicked situation
I hope you learn from my experience and find these things helpful if you are ever stuck in a tropical storm like I was. Remember to always plan for the worst and expect the best, and to make the most out of any situation you are in! Thank you for reading, and don’t forget to smile!
